Introduction to Algebraic Topology
Master M2 - 2013 - MFA (Angers - Bretagne Sud - Nantes)
Geoffrey Powell
The course will introduce the fundamental elements of algebraic topology, in particular the notion of homotopy, namely the study of continuous maps up to continuous deformation, which leads to the concept of the homotopy type of a topological space.
The fundamental group of a space will be introduced and applied to the study of covering spaces via the monodromy action. Thereafter, singular homology and cohomology theory will be developed, introducing the elements from homological algebra which are required.
The theory will be illustrated by examples, in particular introducing cellular complexes and higher homotopy groups.
